{Back to School 2016} Tour

Hey guys! It's been a little while since I have last posted, and I have honestly missed it. I desperately needed a break from everything while we were on our own summer vacation from school though. Ironically today is the day that public schools are back in session in my parts of the country, and let me say...I am SO glad too!

If you didn't already know, we homeschool and summer is not really much of a vacation for us being that EVERYTHING is packed. We have grown to enjoy shopping and visiting cool places while the public schools are in, and the crowds are small ;) With that being said, we plan to start OUR "home"school year this coming Monday, and I have been busy, busy trying to get our school room in order! At this current moment, it is still a mess, but has come SO far...and I think at this point it is just a matter of getting everything moved into place and cleaning a few things up.

I went on a cleaning/reorganizing (much needed) spree two weeks ago, which turned into me purging, re-organizing, and moving furniture to more condusive places in our home. I tend to be an ADD cleaner. I was exhausted, but it feels SO GOOD now to have a much better flow to our home. I still have a few more projects to finish, but I love how far I have come.

Enough of me...and now onto what we are here for today. I am excited to be participating in the Back to School Blog Tour by Lulu & Celeste and Sprouting Jube Jube as well as over 30 bloggers!!!

Because we DO homeschool, I wanted to do something a little different instead of showcasing new outfits for going "Back to School". Instead I wanted to create something that we could use in our school room, and be useful in that aspect! I decided on the One Hour Basket by Hearts and Bees (also known as kelbysews) with the Colored Pencils Paper-Pieced Pattern by Quiet Play. Both of them are FREE on Craftsy!!!! It had been a while since I had done any sort of paper-piecing, so I was excited to get some to use an old skill. Let me tell you...I have been dying to make this pattern for something school-related, and I just adore the way that it turned out. It was quite easy as well! If you are unfamiliar with paper-piecing, here is a great video tutorial from Connecting Threads.

This happened to be my second One Hour Basket that I had made, and with it I made a few tweaks. The first that I made was a bit floppy using the interfacing as suggested in the pattern, so with this one I added an extra layer of lightweight interfacing to the outer as well as to the handles. As you can see, I am not the greatest at figuring out how to piece a quilt block in the correct spot on the basket being that the red colored pencil is partly on the bottom of the basket. I thought that I had it all figured out, but apparently I did some math wrong somewhere...ooops! I am still very happy with the result regardless. After adding the paper-piecing, I still felt that it needed a little something, so I added a little hand stitching....which was the perfect finishing touch.

Doesn't it look just adorable with our new school supplies?!? I know that it will end up being just catch-all of sorts for our art supplies, but I am totally fine with that!

Thank you for stopping by, and make sure to check out the other stops for today:

  3. That's a great looking basket. I rarely take the time to embellish things but it adds such a nice touch. I keep thinking we need some more catch-all containers for our playroom and kids' bedrooms, maybe there are some 1 hour baskets in my future!
